When a good friend passes away you should go to the funeral even if you don't know the parents. Here are some tips for getting through the event:
1) Go to the funeral and introduce yourself to the family, telling them that you were good friends with the deceased.
2) Offer your sympathies to them.
3) Pay your respects to the deceased.
